Investment in diamonds
Quality certification
Investment diamonds should be graded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and confirmed by your expert. The GIA, as the primary grading authority, also grades all other types of diamonds, including lower-quality specimens. Just because a diamond has a GIA appraisal does not mean it is a top quality diamond. Have your expert ensure that the diamond meets the Rapaport Specification 2+ quality standard, and ask him or her to prepare a GIA appraisal report.
Transaction costs and bid / ask spreads
Investors should examine the bid/ask spread (the price difference between the buying and selling price for investment diamonds). If you buy a diamond as an investment, you should find out what you would get if you sold the diamond on the same day.
Expert advice and international market access
It is highly advisable to consult a knowledgeable investment advisor who is familiar with prevailing market conditions and can provide you with valuable information about diamond quality and international diamond prices. Your investment advisor should also have direct access to the trade and global diamond markets to ensure fair pricing.
